Latest driver causes Win 7 BSOD on startup

The IRTrans driver dated 09.10.09 installs fine, but causes a BSOD on start-up most of the time.

Windows 7 64-bit
6 GB RAM
DP35DP motherboard
OrigenAE VF110

"ftdibus.sys" seems to be the culprit. Took me all day to figure it out.

I tried to manually update that driver from the ftdichip website with limited success. If anyone has a step-by-step fix, that would be great.

Also, the skip and replay buttons don't work in Media Center. Easily fixed, though.

That is a known problem.

We will need to wait until FTDI releases a new driver.

They released one 3 Nov. I think it just needs to be incorporated into the IRTrans installer.

Attached is the version 2.6 of the FTDI USB Driver. It does officially support Windows 7.

Please note that this driver is not signed - we are not sure if it can be installed on Windows 7 / x64.

As signing takes some time and is an expensive procedure we want to make sure that it fixes the BSOD problem.

As preinstallation of the driver through the installer is not possible if the driver is not signed there might be the need to remove some memory to update the driver.

We would be happy to get some feedback.

I tried the VCP 2.06 drivers from ftdichip. As there is no installer, in desperation, I just copied over the old files in three locations. Is the one above different?

But then IRTrans wouldn't work. So uninstalled an reinstalled the IRTrans software. I got the IRTrans to work again, and it appeared to leave the new files there, but I still get very frequent BSODs on start-up.

So if you have something you want me to try, I'll be glad to do it when I get back from Africa next week.

Copying the files will NOT work. You will need to install them. In general that can be done via the Device manager (even without having an installer).

Does Windows 7 allow to install them ? If not there might be a registry switch that allows to install unsigned drivers.

We will investigate that further.

I had a few minutes before I left for a week this morning. After I got a clue, I installed the new ftdi driver, and it works great. Hallelujah!

No BSODs after six restarts. I never had more than two good restarts before so I think that fixed it.

I had to use the “Have Disk” option to get it to install. Windows didn’t recognize it as a “better” driver, probably because it wasn’t digitally signed. After bypassing the digital signature warning, it installed just fine.

The remote works, too. ;)

Thanks.

Thank you for the info - looks like that fixes the problem.

Great news :)

I have the same VFD and OS. Looks like I dont have to downgrade to Vista. Will try the new drivers (incl usb) ASAP.

Do you need to install (manually) both the frdibus AND the ftdiport drivers?
