Using IRTrans for VFD, LIRC for different remote?

I prefer to use a different IR device, rather than the one supplied. Is it possible to run the VFD with LCDproc and my other IR receiver with LIRC? From what I understand, the specialized version of LCDProc you have on the website is supposed to run with the IRserver, is this correct?
