sending IR signals seems unreliable

Hi,

I recently received the following:

>> IRTrans USB
>> iRed License
>> IRT-TRANS-4 External IR LED 4-way

I'm trying to control a Denon AVR 2808 using my Mac Mini (running Leopard) and the above hardware.

I've taught iRed a few codes (turning zone 2 on and off), and I've attached one of the LEDs to the sensor on the Denon, but these codes only appear to work intermittently. That is, I have to press the button I created on the virtual remote control multiple times before achieving the desired effect.

I'm a little perplexed -- I would have thought it would either work or not work. I'm not sure why it only sometimes works.

Any ideas?

John

For now this appears to have magically cured itself. Hopefully I will have no further issues...

Hi John,
thank you for the information.

In general sending of IR Codes works very reliable. If not there are only a few reasons:

- IR Code not cleanly learned
- External Transmitter placed incorrectly

This flakiness appears to have returned.

For a while, everything worked fine, but now there are difficulties again. I'm wondering if this might be a USB problem somehow? I find hat when I first launch iRed, it won't recognize the USB module. I have to go into preferences, deselect the USB module, and then reselect it. That seems to get it to recognize the module.

But then when I'm learning codes, iRed will sometimes lock up (as it is right now). I've tried waiting for it to recover, but so far it does not, and I have to force quit.

Hi John,
that might indeed be an USB problem.

What kind of USB cable are you using and how long is it ?

If you have connected the IRTrans to an USB Hub you might try it without the hub.

I'm using the USB cable that was included in the package from IRTrans.

It's not connected to a hub, it's connected directly to the mac mini.

But there are four USB ports on the mac mini, and I'm using several of them.

I'm going to try unplugging all USB devices except for this one to see if that makes a difference.

Hi John,
that might be worthwile testing.

In general we use high quality USB cables that work very well, however the cable might be defective.
Therefore it might be a good idea to test a different USB cable.
